Who We Are

Established in 2010, and registered as a non-profit organization in 2014, Liber Research Community (HK) Company Limited consists of a group of people who undertake independent research with the development of Hong Kong in mind. Liber Research Community is a testing ground where people with different research interests can get together and improve the research capacity of society as a whole. Through quality research and production of socially-relavant knowledge, we aim to shape the breadth and depth of pubic debate on important social issues. Since 2014, we have developed a unique mode of operation that relies on public support , ensuring research independence that would help us to achieve the above goals.

The Research Team

Chan Kim Ching (Kim Ching): trained as a geographer, who also becomes interested in urban planning. Kim Ching studies our city critically from a spatial dimension on a daily basis, in a hope to discover potential to bring in progressive values to our city through quality research. He also frequented universities/tertiary institutions as a visiting/guest lecturer.
Brian Wong: studied geography, politics & public administration, and social policy in universities. Concerned with rural environment, urban planning, land and housing policies, Brian worked in the civil service for some years before joining Liber. He believes that knowledge production outside of the establishment could serve better to initiate positive policy changes in today’s Hong Kong.
Stewart Cheng: Graduated from media and communications, Stewart is concerned about a wide range of urban issues from heritage conservation to environment, often gets his research ideas by being in the outdoors and neighbourhoods across Hong Kong. He is also interested in intangible cultural heritage, local history, and recycling policies.
Sunny Leung: A former reporter who worked in Initium, Ming Pao and Stand News. He studies philosophy, and likes to play with his hair while diving into deep thoughts. Aspiring to research & teaching in universities in the future, he is now focusing on research projects relating to housing and environment.

Cody Chow: The youngest among the team, and is still studying in a university. Cody is passionate about important issues from urban renewal and planning, community space and grassroots economics.
